Overture 1

|

Tsurik zaynen mir in der alter velt,
Vu dibukim un golems gefinen zikh
Nokh alts in yedern vinkl,
Umetum…
(Khotsh mit andere frizurn-spetsyel geyle!
Un avade andersh gekleydt, in der letster mode…)
We are back in the Old World,
Where dybbuks and golems can still be found
In every corner,
Everywhere…
(Although with different hairstyles – especially orange!
And of course dressed differently, in the latest fashion…)
Haynt iz es azoy gring
Alts tsu farshteyn,
Ve’al-kulem ven men hert zikh tomid tsu
Tsum eygenem kol,
Tsu der eybiker ekho-kamer
Fun zikh aleyn…

(Un botl makhn toyznte yorn kultur un gezelshaft)

Zukhndik tikn-oylem makhn,
Shafn a yoysherdike, zikhere velt
Far ale mentshn glaykh?
It’s so easy today
To understand everything
And above all if you are always listening to yourself,
To your own voice,
To the eternal echo-chamber
Of yourself…
How dare we feel forced
To surrender to the arrogance
Either of youth -
(and cancel thousands of years of culture and society)
Or to the arrogance of traditions and the glorification
Of the past -
(while we ignore the many great ideas
That our youth come up with,
Seeking to fix the world,
To create a fairer, safer world
For all people equally?)
Di konservativeh hobn zayer ort;
Di radikale viln a beser lebn.
HOT DEREKH-ERETS FAR DER FARGANGENHEYT; BAGRIST DI TSUKUNFT.
OBER LOZT ZIKH NISHT FARFIRT VERN
NISHT FUN EYNEM, NISHT FUNEM TSVEYTN!
Conservatives have their place;
Radicals want a better life.
RESPECT THE PAST; EMBRACE THE FUTURE.
BUT DO NOT ALLOW YOURSELVES TO BE SEDUCED
BY EITHER!

די קאָנסערװאַטיװע האָבן זײַער אָרט;

Fun Tehilim
07:43
|
|||
Azoy hob ikh aroysgeleyent fun tehilim
This is what I gleaned from the Psalms of Praise
Un voyl iz dem mentsh, vos geyt in dem veg fun gerekhte
Blessed is the person
Who walks in the path of the righteous
Dem glaykhn, dem likhtikn veg fun gerekhte
The straight, the luminous path of the righteous
Zayn lebn iz glaykh tsu a boym vos shtamikt
Their life will be likened to a tree planted
Mit zatftike vortslen bay vasern klore
With fertile roots along clear waters
Its leaves which spread out wide and thick
Kusht oys di zun mit mamisher libshaft
Are kissed by the sun with motherly love
Zey zaynen di traye bashitser far mide
They are the true protectors for tired
Farshmakhte in vogl, oyf khmimeke vegn
Languishing wanderers on hot roads
Vos zetsn zikh shtil unter dem shotn
Who sit down in the tranquil shade
Un zupn fun klorn kvalikn vaser
And drink from the clear gushing water
And bless the spring and the tree with its leaves
Un dem vos rut iber alem
And the One who rests above all

A Khasene In Shtetl
02:58
|

A khasene in shtetl!
Un a khasene-kapelye!
A khidesh, oy, a khidesh,
Zogt, ver zaynen zey?
Nisht nor Yidl mitn fidl
Un Arye mitn bas,

A sheyninke, a gutinke,
A bsule a basheydene,

A krasavitse far Krikn…
Yo! Benye Krik der shtarker,

(Un efsher gor der meylekh?)
Hot zikh oysgeklibn a printsesn
(Un vet efsher makhn fun ir a malke?)
Un nor di same smetene in shtetl

Un s’trogt zikh oykh

Fun hilfloze eltern,

Vos baklogn zikh baym Oybershtn,
Far vos zey muzn gebn
Zayer tsniyesdik eyntsik-tekhterl
Far a korbn Benyen Krikn…
“Tate in himl, vu iz dayn yoysher?
Oyfgehodevet a fayne yidishe tokhter,
Mit tifer libe,
Kedey der Krik zol zi baflekn?
Oy gevald! A mieser sof vart zikher

(Khotsh laydn vet zi nit fun hunger, nit fun dursht,
Un undz bashiremen vet er mistome oykh…)
Oy, vi azoy un vi azoy
Ken men Benyen zogn neyn?”
A wedding in town!
And a wedding band!
Surprise, surprise,
Say, who are they?
Not only Yidl with his fiddle
And Arye with his bass,
But quite a number of musicians as well:
Jewish, Gypsyish,
From near and far…
Over fields, roads, on hay-wagons,
Through sun and wind and rain
Come twenty-two klezmer musos!
Summoned, they have gathered
For a huge wedding:
Benye Krik* has chosen a bride for himself!
A lovely one, a good one,
A shy, virginal maiden -
Only the best for Benye,
A beauty queen for Krik…
Yes! Benye Krik the strongman,
The boss of the town,
A prince among thieves
(and perhaps actually a king?)
Has picked a princess for himself
(and will maybe make a queen out of her?)
And only the crème de la crème of town
Will dance at her wedding.
But carried over the shtetl
Are not only the delicious aromas
Of festive cooking,
But also unpleasant odours
Of blood, sweat and despair…
And carried as well is
A bitter weeping
Of helpless parents,
Grieving father and mother,
Lamenting to the One above,
That they must give
Their modest, only daughter
As a sacrifice to Benye Krik…
“Father in heaven, where is your justice?
We’ve brought up a fine, Jewish daughter
With deep love,
So that Krik should tarnish her?
Good heavens! An ugly fate surely awaits
Our precious darling…
(Although she will suffer neither from hunger nor thirst,
And he will probably protect us too…)
Oh, how on earth
Can one say no to Benye?
*Benye Krik, an anti-hero of “The Odessa Tales” (1923-31) by Isaac Babel (1894-1940)

The future is now!
We create it every moment anew.
Destiny is in our hands.
To give meaning to our choices,
We have to understand well
Where we came from and
How our forebears communicated
Knowledge and values
From generation to generation.
All this, in order for us to understand
How to search for a way
To find things in common,
In order to be able to work together.
Perhaps the whole story starts
With a gentle rabbi
Teaching small children their Hebrew alphabet
In a small, warm room
Whilst a little fire crackles in the fireplace?

Once there was a land, sweet and fine.
To live there is a pleasure;
What your heart desires,
You can get;
A mamligele, a pastrami, a karnatsele
And a glass of wine, aha!
Ay, in Romania life is so good,
No-one knows of care.
Wine is drunk all over,
You snack on kashtaval.
Hay, digadi dam…
Ay, in Romania life is so good,
No-one knows of worries.
Wine is drunk, even if it’s late
You snack on a kastrovet.
Hay, digadi dam…
Oh my goodness, I’m going crazy!
I only like to eat brinz’e and mamalige;
I dance and rejoice up to the ceiling,
When I eat a patla-zhele!
Dzhing-ma…
Sing, sing….
Oh, it’s such a pleasure,
It couldn’t be better!
Oh, what a pleasure
To drink Romanian wine.
Romanians drink wine
And eat mamalige;
He who kisses his own wife
Ah, he’s the one who’s mad!
Zing-may…
Boom boom…
Sing, sing…
Bam-fa…
Oh, it’s such a pleasure,
It couldn’t be better!
Oh, what a pleasure
Is only Romanian wine.

Stop and kiss the cook, Khaye,
Dressed in old rags,
She’s making a pie for the Sabbath.

And took the best piece;
Moyshe-Khayim, Borukh-Shmil -
Grab a tickle on the sly.
Zets! Tay yidl-ti-tam…
And the poor girl is sulking,
And he wants to,
But she won’t let him -
Tshu!
Ah, in Romania life is good,
No-one there has any cares.
Wine is drunk far and wide,
And one snacks on kashtaval.
Zets! Tay yidl-ti-tam…
Ah, it’s such a pleasure,
it couldn’t be better!

דאָס בעסטע חלק צוגענומען;

A true, difficult and deep question for our times:
In what sort of situation do we find ourselves nowadays?
Is it possible that
Western economic rationalism
Together with logic and science
have led us to the end of imagination?
We no longer need a Minister For The Arts
Nor do we need children to be engaged with the world
of nature….
Is it really now all to do with
Forest Baths in the city?
Instead of the hyperactivity
and the ultra-brightness
of the modern world,
we need to go back;
to black
Because there we will find
the love of silence,
the lap, the very womb
of creativity
and joy…..
The most corrupting influence
In the whole world
Is the unregulated access of the under-aged
To the internet
How is this shaping
The attitude
Of our future generation of leaders?
To the quick fix?
To easy sniping?
To trolling?
To the simplification
of everything to an easy catch-phrase
A sound-bite

Back in black
My Yiddish heart
I search the sky for a sign in the stars
In the dark cosmos
My radiant heart
I sing a song but nobody will hear it
In the soul of the world
Just a bit of magic’s missing
I ask God for a little help
In a dream we dance
With the four ancestors
Back in black
Endless ecstasy

Just as two of our
greatest Jewish sages,
Rabbi Hal David
and Rabbi Burt Bacharach
have written:
What the world needs now, is love, sweet love
It’s the only thing
That there’s just too little of
What the world needs now
Is love sweet love
No not just for one,
But for everyone…..

Sabbath
Jews, let there be Sabbath
May there be Sabbath
Sabbath upon the whole world
Dreams
Let us all dream
May there be a dream
May there be a dream
Peace upon the whole world
Fear
The world is full of fear
Hold my hand, brother, sister
Strength upon the whole world
Love
Let there be love
May there be love
Let there be Sabbath
Sabbath upon the whole world
Fate
What will be our fate?
What will be will be
Let there be Sabbath
Sabbath throughout the world
RAP
Jews, may there be Sabbath
Make me a stew with hot beans
Sit yourself down, let’s drink some wine
Let’s talk about freedom
Justice and pain
Chopped liver, a Love Supreme
We drink to our enemies
We drink to our brothers and sisters
The world is mad, dark and black
It can break your bones
It can break your heart
It’s a stinky world
Everybody wants more money
It’s not good!
I’m not going along with it
WE ARE YID!
HEAR OUR SONG!
I don’t want to talk about politics
I don’t want to hear your old shtick
Today it could rain, tomorrow a storm
I’ll be your umbrella, you’ll be my arm
We’re fighting all the time, what’s the reason?
The road to salvation is a Love Supreme
Peace upon you Ladies and Gentlemen,
The world is a doughnut, floating through the stars
Peace
May there be Peace
Let there be Peace
Let there be Love
Sabbath upon the whole world

Azoy hob ikh aroysgeleyent fun tehilim
This is what I gleaned from the Psalms of Praise
Un voyl iz dem mentsh, vos geyt in dem veg fun gerekhte
Blessed is the person
Who walks in the path of the righteous
Dem glaykhn, dem likhtikn veg fun gerekhte
The straight, the luminous path of the righteous
Zayn lebn iz glaykh tsu a boym vos shtamikt
Their life will be likened to a tree planted
Mit zatftike vortslen bay vasern klore
With fertile roots along clear waters
Its leaves which spread out wide and thick
Kusht oys di zun mit mamisher libshaft
Are kissed by the sun with motherly love
Zey zaynen di traye bashitser far mide
They are the true protectors for tired
Farshmakhte in vogl, oyf khmimeke vegn
Languishing wanderers on hot roads
Vos zetsn zikh shtil unter dem shotn
Who sit down in the tranquil shade
Un zupn fun klorn kvalikn vaser
And drink from the clear gushing water
And bless the spring and the tree with its leaves
Un dem vos rut iber alem
And the One who rests above all
