A khasene in shtetl!
Un a khasene-kapelye!
A khidesh, oy, a khidesh,
Zogt, ver zaynen zey?
Nisht nor Yidl mitn fidl
Un Arye mitn bas,
Nor oykh nokh a hipshe tsol muzikantn:
Yidishe, tsigaynishe,
Hi’yige un vaytinke…
Iber felder, vegn, oyf fil vogns hey,
Mit zun un vint un regn,
Forn klezmer tsvontsik-un-tsvey!
Tsunoyfgerufn un zikh farzamlt
Lekoved a groyser simkhe:
Benye Krik* hot zikh oysgeklibn a kale!
A sheyninke, a gutinke,
A bsule a basheydene,
Nor di beste far Benyen,
A krasavitse far Krikn…
Yo! Benye Krik der shtarker,
Der balebos fun shtetl,
A prints tsvishn ganovim
(Un efsher gor der meylekh?)
Hot zikh oysgeklibn a printsesn
(Un vet efsher makhn fun ir a malke?)
Un nor di same smetene in shtetl
Veln tantsn oyf der khasene.
Ober s’trogn zikh ibern shtetl
Nisht nor geshmake reykhes
Fun yontevdike gekekhts,
Ober oykh shtinkendike reykhes
Fun blut, shveys un fun yi’esh….
Un s’trogt zikh oykh
A biter geveyn
Fun hilfloze eltern,

Vos baklogn zikh baym Oybershtn,
Far vos zey muzn gebn
Zayer tsniyesdik eyntsik-tekhterl
Far a korbn Benyen Krikn…
“Tate in himl, vu iz dayn yoysher?
Oyfgehodevet a fayne yidishe tokhter,
Mit tifer libe,
Kedey der Krik zol zi baflekn?
Oy gevald! A mieser sof vart zikher

(Khotsh laydn vet zi nit fun hunger, nit fun dursht,
Un undz bashiremen vet er mistome oykh…)
Oy, vi azoy un vi azoy
Ken men Benyen zogn neyn?”
A wedding in town!
And a wedding band!
Surprise, surprise,
Say, who are they?
Not only Yidl with his fiddle
And Arye with his bass,
But quite a number of musicians as well:
Jewish, Gypsyish,
From near and far…
Over fields, roads, on hay-wagons,
Through sun and wind and rain
Come twenty-two klezmer musos!
Summoned, they have gathered
For a huge wedding:
Benye Krik* has chosen a bride for himself!
A lovely one, a good one,
A shy, virginal maiden -
Only the best for Benye,
A beauty queen for Krik…
Yes! Benye Krik the strongman,
The boss of the town,
A prince among thieves
(and perhaps actually a king?)
Has picked a princess for himself
(and will maybe make a queen out of her?)
And only the crème de la crème of town
Will dance at her wedding.
But carried over the shtetl
Are not only the delicious aromas
Of festive cooking,
But also unpleasant odours
Of blood, sweat and despair…
And carried as well is
A bitter weeping
Of helpless parents,
Grieving father and mother,
Lamenting to the One above,
That they must give
Their modest, only daughter
As a sacrifice to Benye Krik…
“Father in heaven, where is your justice?
We’ve brought up a fine, Jewish daughter
With deep love,
So that Krik should tarnish her?
Good heavens! An ugly fate surely awaits
Our precious darling…
(Although she will suffer neither from hunger nor thirst,
And he will probably protect us too…)
Oh, how on earth
Can one say no to Benye?

This wild ensemble infuses traditional Yiddish tunes with new takes from across genres, including elements of EDM, Weimar

This is a richly layered composition- the music is wonderful- and the texts really work well with it. It feels like it's pushing Yiddish music forward while staying connected to the past.
I don’t have the gift of prophecy so I can’t predict the future- but I would not be surprised if years from now this will cunt among the classics of the repertoire of Yiddish music. Shamma Boyarin
